SAVE WRIGHT Annual Conference coming to Philadelphia in September
With its rich history in progressive American architecture and design, Philadelphia provides a splendid vantage point to explore Frank Lloyd Wright’s work in relation to that of his east coast contemporaries and students during this year’s annual conference, September 21-25, 2011.
This year’s conference will be headquartered at the Sheraton Society Hill, situated in one of Philadelphia’s most charming historic neighborhoods filled with brick Federal and Georgian rowhouses and steps away from Center City.
Philadelphia Modern House Tour 2011
Hooray Modern House Fans. The annual Philadelphia Modern House Tour has just been announced, organized by realtor Craig Wakefield, but this time also by Philadelphia’s new Chapter of DocoMomo. Here is more info from Craig:
I am glad to announce the 4th annual Philadelphia Modern Home Tour. The Oct 9th, 2011 tour is of Mid-Century Modern Homes in Delaware County. The lineup is great this year and I hope you are all able to attend. As in past years there will be much variety in the homes that are included. Work by architects Arthur Tofanni, Arthur White, Rudolphs Zaprauskis, Irwin Stein, Edward Robinson, and possibly a home by George Daub are included. This year I am presenting the tour together with the newly formed Philadelphia Area Docomomo Chapter and all ticket proceeds will go to the chapter. Again as in past years the tour will be a self driving tour and you will be able to proceed at your own pace. Background information and maps will be emailed to all who have purchased tickets prior to the tour. Tickets will be limited to 100 this year and I expect we will sell out quickly as in years past. Please send me a note to let me know how many tickets you would like me to reserve for you. Please also mail the donation check made out to DOCOMOMO to my home address included below, after letting me know how many tickets you want reserved. More photos of the homes that are included along with photos from previous tours can be found on the community page of my website:
The New Canaan Historical Society will present “Seeing Modern,” an all-day tour and symposium featuring some of New Canaan’s mid-century modern homes designed by the preeminent architects of the time.

A Modern House project here in our Region
A project by Gregory La Vardera Architect, DVM member/organizer (or lack of organizer!). This house is a near complete tear down and reinvention of an existing house creating what he has come to call “MoTrad” - a mix of modern design and traditional form. In this case the owner desired the house to be a good neighbor on this suburban street, but have a distinct modern aesthetic which became more dominant at the rear of the house.
The house is in its last phase of construction, finishes have begun. Would DVM members care to lobby the owner for a tour date when the house is complete? Contact Greg if so.
